Clemens Food Group Selects Cleaver-Brooks CBEX for New Plant

Clemens Food Group is a family-owned pork processor. When company executives were considering an expansion, they were looking for long-term sustainability. No other pork processor had built a new plant in 10 years, but Clemens executives saw the many benefits of new construction and began developing plans for a 600,000-sq.-ft. processing facility in Coldwater, Michigan.

Challenge:

The new plant had to meet the changing needs of a processing plant that typically processes 10,000 hogs in one shift. Another requirement was designing for two feedwater connections. Rendering is the plant's largest steam user, and rendering feedwater had to be returned back to the boiler on a separate connection.

Solution:

Cleaver-Brooks installed three 1,200-hp CBEX firetube boilers with advanced 4000 Hawk controls and a Master Panel to guide the system. The system automatically shifts between the two feedwater sources depending on the availability of higher-temperature rendering feedwater. 

Results:

Clemens opened the plant on time and on budget, and the boiler system is achieving targeted efficiency and emissions goals. 

When it comes time for Clemens to expand its plant, increasing the steam load will be simple. Cleaver-Brooks designed the system for four boilers, so Clemens can easily add a fourth CBEX boiler. All of the connections are in place, and the tanks are sized appropriately.
